These works, typically consisting of collections of instructions, recipes, formulae, and “experiments,” functioned as a bridge between the technical knowledge of artisans and the Aristotelian natural philosophy of scholars. Often positioned at the margins of scholastic science, they nonetheless sustained a practical and experience-based approach to nature. William Eamon’s study examines how this tradition evolved from a marginal and largely hidden body of knowledge into an increasingly systematized experimental methodology during the Renaissance, and ultimately analyzes its significant role in the formation of modern science and the emergence of scientific academies. سنت کتب اسرار یکی از پایدارترین و مستمرترین سنت‌های نوشتاری در اروپا بود که از اوایل قرون میانه تا قرن هفدهم تداوم یافت. این نوشته‌ها که مشتمل بر مجموعه‌ای از دستورالعمل‌ها، نسخه‌ها، فرمول‌ها و «تجارب» بودند، نقشی پلی میان دانش فنی صنعتگران و فلسفه طبیعی ارسطویی عالمان را ایفا می‌کردند. هرچند این متون غالباً در حاشیه‌ی علوم مدرسی قرار می‌گرفتند، با این حال رویکردی عملی و مبتنی بر تجربه نسبت به طبیعت را تداوم بخشیدند. ویلیام ایمون در پژوهش خود نشان می‌دهد که این سنت چگونه از دانشی حاشیه‌ای و عمدتاً پنهان به روشی تجربی و ‌کم‌وبیش نظام‌مند در دوران رنسانس تحول یافت و در نهایت به بررسی نقش پررنگ آن در شکل‌گیری علم مدرن و پیدایش آکادمی‌های علمی می‌پردازد.
