Throughout the history of Islamic civilization, distinguished scholars have consistently emerged who, through their scientific and practical endeavors, have significantly contributed to its growth and flourishing. One such scholar is Afḍal al-Dīn Khūnajī (1194–1248), born in Khūnā or Khūnaj (Kāghadhkanān). After completing his early education in Islamic sciences, he migrated to Egypt during the Mongol invasion of Iran, settled in Cairo, and became a leading figure of his time in logic, philosophy, Islamic law, and medicine. Appointed by the ruler of Egypt as the Chief Judge (Qāḍī al-Quḍāt), he passed away in this role. This descriptive study aims to gather insights into the life, era, status, and scholarly works of Afḍal al-Dīn Khūnajī, and to introduce his intellectual and socio-political standing within Islamic civilization. His surviving works in jurisprudence, logic, and medicine suggest that he was a preeminent authority in both rational and transmitted sciences of his time, playing a pivotal role in their development. His appointment to judicial and medical positions by the Egyptian ruler also indicates that he was a trusted reference not only in theoretical knowledge but also in practical sciences among the Muslim community of Egypt.
