Abstract
Music is an art form for expressing human emotions and feelings, utilizing instruments and the creation of melodies to present artistic expressions. This art has been invented since ancient times and has held diverse roles and applications among different peoples. One of the nations with a particularly rich heritage in music is Iran. In ancient Iran, music held a special status among kings and Zoroastrian priests and was considered a fundamental element in religious and ceremonial practices. Following the advent of Islam in Iran, music was influenced by Islamic views and was condemned and restricted by some Islamic jurists. Nevertheless, music continued through various Islamic periods and reached its peak during certain eras, such as the Abbasid and Seljuk periods.
The purpose of this study is to provide a comparative analysis of music in Iran before and after the advent of Islam, up to the end of the Seljuk era. This research aims to analyze existing documents and evidence to clarify the extent of Islamic cultural influence on the art of music. The research method used in this article is descriptive-analytical, and the data were collected through library research. The central question of this study is: What are the similarities and differences in Iranian music before and after Islam, and what role did Islam play in its transformation? The findings indicate that although the arrival of Islam brought changes to the structure, content, and function of music in Iran, the art of music continued to exist by adapting to new frameworks while maintaining its core identity. This study is based on available library sources and employs a descriptive-analytical academic approach.
