The process of the transfer and localization of modern military cartographic knowledge and techniques in Qajar Iran began with the companions of the French General Gardane, due to the outbreak of the Russo-Iranian wars and the need of military commanders for this knowledge. French officers provided selected military commanders with scientific and practical training in military surveying and mapping. In addition, following Abbas Mirza’s dispatch of students abroad, some of the students sent to Europe acquired knowledge in this field. With the establishment of Dar al-Funun, military cartography was taught within the framework of infantry and artillery science by foreign and Iranian teachers, and its instruction expanded with the establishment of other military schools, such as the Military School. This article seeks to examine and explain the process of the introduction and teaching of this knowledge on the basis of primary historical sources, such as books, documents, and newspapers.
